Robert Dale Smith Entrepreneur, Software Developer, Techie |
Throughout my life it has been a common occurrence that when some individuals hear that my name is Robert Smith, they are compelled to bring up Robert Smith of The Cure. I think its pretty funny to hear it though. If you like The Cure, then you generally think I am awesome for having the lead singers name. Interesting thing is that these comments mostly come from individuals that are around ten years older than me. I was born in the mid 1980s so I missed experiencing apart of the eighties. I was aware of The Cure's music long before I started being confronted about my name, but I didn't know I shared the same name with the front-man of the band. Just about everybody has heard Love Song by The Cure but many people around my age have only heard the 311 cover.
I have a very common first and last name, which is why I use my full name for my online presence. My last name is the most common last name in the US, UK, and Australia, second in Canada, fifth in Ireland, and it is the eighth most common surname in the world. I have only met a few other Robert's in person and they usually go by Rob, Bob, or Bobby. Personally I prefer being called just Robert. When I first got onto the internet it was sort of taboo to give out your real name. Now in the age of social networks its changed a bit. Since the early years of the world wide web I have also gone by the internet handle FFPSX, but I have never been afraid to use my full name because of it being so common.
Although The Cure isn't one of my most favorite bands, I do own a couple albums in my vast eclectic music collection. I appreciate the fame Robert Smith of The Cure has brought to my name, and I admire his creative success in the music industry. I thought it was hilarious seeing Robert Smith's guest appearance on an episode of South Park. In the episode Cartman learns that, "Robert Smith kicks-ass".
